Oris has finally joined in on the fully-lumed dial trend with its 2025 installment of the Holstein Edition. Based on the ProPilot platform but executed with a stealthy aesthetic and hidden message under its lume, this sixth installment in the series might just be the most charming watch Oris has released all year. What appears to be a straightforward black-and-white pilot’s watch transforms into something entirely different when the lights go down. Let’s take a look…

The Bear Necessities

Each year since 2020, Oris has marked its June 1st birthday by taking one of its timepieces and adding a playful touch. Limited to 250 pieces each, these watches showcase the brand’s love for creative freedom within the rules of classic watchmaking. Previous years brought us everything from funky dial colors to a revival of old models. So if you just glanced at this year’s edition, you might think it were a bit understated.

Built on the ProPilot platform, the Holstein Edition 2025 strips things down to their essence, keeping the 41mm stainless steel case proportions but now wrapping it in matte black DLC coating, paired with what appears to be a basic white dial. The monochromatic execution is as straightforward as you can get, with blackened hands and numerals creating stark contrast against that pristine white surface. Even at its worst, this timepiece is about as legible as you could hope for in a pilot’s watch.

But there’s a twist that makes it even more legible at night. That white dial is fully treated with Super-LumiNova, glowing green when you turn off the lights. You’ll also notice the Oris Bear’s silhouette appearing between 3 and 4 o’clock, grinning back at you in the dark. It’s the kind of hidden detail that should resonate with diehard fans of the watchmaker, if not bordering on fan service.

Technical Substance

The 41mm case maintains the ProPilot’s signature aviation-inspired details, including the fluted bezel nodding to jet engine turbines, the oversized screw-down crown, and the domed sapphire crystal. Matching the black case is a black textile strap, featuring Oris’s “LIFT” clasp that mimics airplane seatbelt buckles and rendered in matching black DLC as well.

The playful dial execution doesn’t compromise the watch’s serious mechanical foundation. Inside ticks the Oris Calibre 400-2 automatic, a no-date variant of their excellent in-house movement with 120 hours of power reserve, anti-magnetic properties, and an impressive 10-year warranty with matching service intervals. Best of all, the movement can be viewed through the sapphire caseback window, around which there’s a fully-lumed ring that reads “Holstein Edition 2025,” even in the dark. Serving no practical purpose, lumed casebacks are incredibly rare in the watch world but that’s also what makes this detail all the more special and intimate here.
