Omega’s had a long, illustrious history with the NASA Space Program. And even many non-watch enthusiasts know about the Speedmaster’s connection to the Apollo 11 mission, being the first-ever timepiece worn on the Moon. But the Swiss watchmaker’s connection to NASA dates back even further. Though it was officially certified on all manned space missions in 1965, the first Apollo mission to be accompanied by the Speedmaster was actually Apollo 8, in which astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders all ventured around the Moon with the chronograph strapped to their wrists.
In 2013, Omega celebrated this feat with the Dark Side of the Moon edition of the Speedmaster. And today, the collection is getting an update with four new models. Let’s take a look…

The Dark-Red Edition Gets a Manual Movement
The standout here is the new Dark-Red version, which ditches the automatic movement for the manually wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9908. This swap alone shaves over 3mm off the case thickness, bringing it down to just 13.02mm — a huge improvement over the 16.14mm profile we’ve been dealing with since 2013. The 44.25mm black ceramic case gets Omega’s refined bevelled polished ceramic process, which adds some serious depth to the finish.
Where this one really comes alive is the dial. You’ve got the matte laser-sandblasted ceramic base done entirely in black, with grey printed text and a punchy red varnished chronograph seconds hand that pairs with the red “Speedmaster” script. It’s aggressive without trying too hard. The blacked-out Cal. 9908 movement visible through the caseback is a nice touch, too. And while this is the only model available exclusively on the rubber strap, that strap features a lunar surface texture on the underside.

The Classic Gets Slimmer
The OG Dark Side of the Moon has been refined across the board. Now measuring 15.09mm thick (down from 16.14mm), it swaps the old Calibre 9300 for the Co-Axial Master Chronometer 9900. The automatic movement brings 60 hours of power reserve and full METAS certification, which the previous generation lacked. The two-plate ceramic dial construction uses laser-brushed finishing, and the Liquidmetal tachymeter scale on the bezel improves scratch resistance. With 18K white gold hands and indices filled with Super-LumiNova, this version prioritizes legibility over stealth, which feels right for a watch this size.

Black-Black Goes Full Stealth
For those who want maximum monochrome, the Black-Black edition delivers. Sharing the same 44.25mm and 15.09mm case dimensions and automatic Calibre 9900 as the standard model, this one goes all-in on the dark aesthetic with a laser-sandblasted matte ceramic dial, black enamel tachymeter scale, and even black Super-LumiNova. The movement gets a full black treatment to match. It’s the stealthiest option in the lineup and wears that badge proudly.

Grey Side of the Moon Also Goes Monochrome
Taking cues from last year’s Apollo 8 edition, the Grey Side of the Moon features a skeletonized dial with laser-ablated lunar surface textures. The 44.25mm case is rendered entirely in grey ceramic, and Jim Lovell’s quote — “The moon is essentially grey” — is engraved on the caseback. Inside is the hand-wound Calibre 3869, the same movement found in the modern Moonwatch, which keeps the case down to a very wearable 12.97mm. This one’s easily the most sophisticated of the bunch.
