Since first appearing in the First and Second World Wars, field watches have experienced a massive resurgence in popularity in recent years, largely on the strength of the watch style’s minimalistic military-inspired appearance and ample durability. And while there’s admittedly no shortage of these type of timepieces on the market, the Luminox team has just introduced what’s undoubtedly one of the finest takes on a modern field watch that we’ve ever seen with what the tactical brand has christened the Luminox Atacama Field 1960 Series Watch.

The Atacama Field Watch is constructed around a 43mm case that’s crafted from Luminox’s proprietary CARBONOX material — an ultra-rugged yet extremely lightweight carbon fiber-based carbon long bar compound. Measuring just 14mm thick, the case sports a fixed bezel, a stainless steel case back inscribed with the Luminox compass logo, and a protected knurled screw-down crown decorated in an engraved Luminox crest and an IP black-plating — perfectly matching the stealthy hue of the CARBONOX case construction. At the heart of the watch is a Swiss-made Ronda 515 quartz movement. Nickel-plated and equipped with a single jewel, this 515 motor affords a ridiculously precise accuracy of just 10/+20 seconds per month. What’s more, the movement can run for more than 4 years on a single battery — maintaining its ultra-precise time-keeping abilities all the while. The Atacama Field 1960 Series watch’s case also comes paired with a 23mm dynamic black, rubber-lined textile strap with tone-in-tone stitching and custom CARBONOX hardware and buckle.

Engineered to stand up to some of the world’s most hostile conditions — and to look great while doing so — the Atacama Field 1960 Series watch is made in Switzerland and features absolutely stellar craftsmanship and fit and finish. Fortified beneath a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, the dial of the watch has a textured finish that’s inspired by the terrain and rugged landscape of the Atacama Desert in Chile from which this field watch derives its name. Sporting both 12 and 24-hour numerals and a 3 o’clock date window, the textured dial also benefits from the use of the watchmaker’s signature, super-bright Luminox Light Technology, which is able to emit a constant glow for up to a quarter of a century. This takes the form of green-glowing hour markers and orange glow details on the hands as well as at the 12 o’clock marker. In addition to being incredibly rugged, the thing is also water resistant down to 100 meters (or 330’). The liberal use of CARBONOX also enables this field watch to tip the scales at just 71 grams (or 2.5oz). Luminox is producing the Atacama Field Watch in a trio of colorways; a dark green dial variant with sand hour numbers; a black dial-spec with sand hour numbers; and a full-blackout version.
