IWC just answered the plea that’s been floating around watch forums since 2019. Following the massive 44mm-plus iterations of the Mojave Desert editions of the past, such as the Chronograph or the Perpetual Calendar, the Swiss brand finally brings its fan-favorite sand-colored ceramic to a much more compact Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 TOP GUN.

Debuting in 2022, the 41mm TOP GUN was a welcomed addition to the catalog in any right, and has already been tapped to bring the snowy-white Lake Tahoe colorway to more wearable proportions. Now it’s time for the Mojave Desert to do the same, in a package that you can actually wear comfortably.

The Desert Returns

For 6 years, the Mojave Desert collection has been pushing IWC’s ceramic watchmaking forward while paying homage to the harsh testing grounds of Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. First applied to the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN, the khaki hue reminiscent of flight suits is accomplished by blending zirconium oxide with metallic oxides, after which a sintering process makes the case essentially scratch-proof.

Still a Pilot’s Watch

Despite the monochromatic look (aside from the titanium crown and caseback), this 41mm iteration debuting this week is the purest expression of the concept so far. Nailing the balancing act between wrist presence and practical wear, the watch also sports a 11.4mm thickness while maintaining the 100m of water resistance. For magnetic field protection that’s crucial for any pilot’s watch, the TOP GUN 41’s soft-iron inner case provides magnetic field protection.

Mirroring the case’s earth tones, the brown dial creates a cohesive desert camouflage that works surprisingly well in everyday “civilian” environments. Without any chronograph registers or complications, you have maximum legibility — just a date window at the 3 for maintaining a clean look for the Pilot’s Watch. Likewise, Arabic numerals and the minute track get the Super-LumiNova treatment for nighttime visibility.

Technical Foundation

Under the hood sits IWC’s Caliber 32112 automatic, which has become the reliable workhorse of their modern Pilot’s Watch lineup. A bidirectional pawl winding system efficiently helps achieve an impressive 120-hour power reserve, while the 28,800 vph frequency is more than serviceable.

Lastly, matching the case and dial is a beige rubber strap with textile inlay. Combined with the titanium pin buckle, this was designed to match the lightweight wearing experience of the watch itself.
