These days, all-black timepieces aren’t the novelty they once were, but in the late ‘70s when Timex debuted its Black Max, people took notice. Taking design cues from Porsche Design’s Chronograph 1, the Black Max was significantly more accessible and, some would say, even better looking than its progenitor, with its unique black helmet-shaped case and matching Oyster-style bracelet. Online retail curator Huckberry, who’s known to help revive certain iconic timepieces from the past (including the Ironman FLIX), has teamed up yet again with Timex to reintroduce the 1979 Black Max for a 2025 audience.

Bolstering the case size to a more contemporary 41mm diameter (up from 38mm), the new Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max is aesthetically almost identical to the original from the ‘70s with its brushed stainless steel case that’s been coated in black. Underneath the mineral crystal, you’ll see a stunning black dial surrounded by a white tachymeter bezel that conveys its auto-racing influence. Instead of numerals for the hours, the main dial shows the minutes/seconds numerals (every “5” interval) at each marker. The only other color besides white and black comes in the form of the bright orange second hand and steel crown.

Under the hood, the Black Max is powered by a reliable quartz three-hand movement. It sits behind a steel caseback that features an etching of Huckberry’s iconic tree logo. One other major upgrade this 2025 version gets is solid water resistance, which sits at 100m (the original was reportedly only splash resistant).

Lastly, the matching black stainless steel bracelet sports an interchangeable design compatible with most 20mm straps, so if you wanted to find some sort of substitute, the sizing shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Priced at $249, the Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max is currently available from Huckberry’s web store.
