Hanhart’s 417 is a sight to behold. One of the most famous pilot’s chronographs ever, the original model from the 1950s has sustained its legendary status through its ties to Steve McQueen, who took a liking to the watch. However, it began its life as Hanhart’s first dedicated chronograph for the post-War German Air Force (Bundeswehr), prioritizing robustness, legibility, and flyback reset for aerial timing. Today, the 417 meets vintage with contemporary, getting its first titanium case ever, and it’s a real stunner.

The King of Cool’s Watch
Steve McQueen was a special kind of style icon. He didn’t just become notable for wearing what costume designers or stylists told him to put on, but turned lesser-known pieces into fashion staples (think Persol sunglasses or chukka boots).
One piece the King of Cool particularly loved was his Hanhart 417 ES timepiece. In the 1960s, Hanhart wasn’t particularly a household name, but still McQueen turned this tool watch into one of the most legendary pilot’s chronographs ever. How he acquired the watch is still a mystery, being only around 500 were made, and in the 1950s when the actor was still making a name for himself. Nevertheless, he took a liking to the timepiece, wearing it in a couple of his films (most famously The Thomas Crown Affair) and even an iconic LIFE photo shoot in Palm Springs. You can simply call this watch “The McQueen” and most enthusiasts would know what you’re referring to.

Titanium Enters the Chat
In keeping the 417 rooted in its tool-watch ethos, the introduction of a Grade 5 titanium case is a move that feels somewhat overdue. Grade 5 is the harder, more scratch-resistant alloy compared to the softer Grade 2 variety, meaning this thing can take a beating on your wrist. It’s lighter and more corrosion-resistant than steel, and Hanhart has gone fully matte with the sandblasted finish.

The sand-colored dial is a departure from the 417’s traditional black or white, drawing directly from Hanhart’s own Primus Desert Pilot, a watch associated with Dakar Rally driver Stephan Schott. It works remarkably well, giving the watch a dusty, warm tone that pairs perfectly with the matte gray titanium case. The bi-compax layout is carried over, with Arabic numerals and syringe hands, all rendered in the brand’s historical typography and logo. One note of transparency: Hanhart openly acknowledges the lume performance here is limited. Both the black numerals and sand-colored hands are treated with Super-LumiNova, but the dark and warm base colors mean this watch isn’t going to glow in your nightstand drawer. Hanhart essentially chose aesthetic coherence over luminescent punch.

The rest of the Specs
Inside ticks the Sellita AMT5100 M, a manually-wound column wheel chronograph with flyback functionality. The flyback complication gives you the ability to instantly reset and restart the chronograph in a single pusher action, no stop-reset-start sequence required. Each movement is regulated in-house at Hanhart’s Black Forest manufacture to 0/+8 seconds per day, and the caliber is finished with heat-blued screws and Cotes de Geneve on the 3/4 plate, all visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback. The beat rate sits at 4Hz (28,800 vph), with a generous 58-hour power reserve on a full wind. There’s also a soft-iron inner case providing anti-magnetic protection, which completes the proper tool-watch credentials.

The 417 TI comes in both 39mm and 42mm, sharing an identical 13.6mm case height (11.55mm without the domed sapphire crystal) and 100m of water resistance. Both are solid offerings, depending on your own wrist size. The watches arrive with two strap options: a sand FKM rubber strap with a woven textile pattern, or a classic black version, each closed with a Grade 5 titanium pin buckle.
