
AI is everywhere these days, and frankly, most of us are still figuring out how to feel about it. From creative industries pushing back against algorithmic art to consumers questioning whether their favorite products are losing their human touch, artificial intelligence carries a certain stigma that brands typically try to downplay or avoid mentioning altogether. But G-SHOCK just did the exact opposite with its new MTGB4000. They didn’t just simply admit they used AI in the design process, they’re making it a central selling point that’s enhanced rather than replaced human creativity.

The AI Advantage
The MT-G collection has always been about marrying disparate materials into something cohesive and tough, but with the MTGB4000, Casio ran that philosophy through an AI feedback loop, using machine learning to analyze decades of G-SHOCK impact data and optimize structural performance in ways human designers might never have considered.
Rather than handing design duties over to algorithms entirely, Casio employed a “co-creation” process. Human designers would sketch initial concepts, feed them into AI systems trained on G-SHOCK’s shock-resistance database, then receive optimized 3D prototypes back. This back-and-forth continued until they landed on something that satisfied both human aesthetic sensibilities and AI-driven performance metrics.
Creating a bridge-like connection between its steel elements, the watch has been given a carbon and glass fiber laminated frame, cut from layered sheets that have been integrated directly with the resin strap. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before, giving the watch an almost exoskeletal appearance where traditional case components are cradled within a protective carbon cocoon.

Material Mastery
Still boasting 200m of water resistance, the carbon frame showcases beautiful layered patterns created by the intersection of carbon and glass fibers. The metal components receive Sallaz polishing on mirror surfaces, creating distortion-free finishes that catch light beautifully. For the MTGB4000B-1A2 variant, Casio introduces a newly developed blue-gray ion plating that gives the steel components a distinctive, almost gunmetal appearance.
For the dial construction, Yamagata Casio’s fine processing technology creates a multi-layered arrangement with slanted dial rings and boldly raised indexes that create impressive depth and legibility.

Size Check
Like most G-SHOCKs, the MTGB4000 is quite large, stretching 45.3mm wide with a 56.6mm lug-to-lug and 14.4mm thickness. Of course, if you’ve ever worn one of the brand’s watches, you’ll know that they optimize comfort and weight better than almost anyone. And the carbon fiber frame makes all the difference here.
Performance Package
Functionally, the MTGB4000 delivers the greatest hits that you’d expect from a flagship G-SHOCK. Tough Solar charging provides five months of operation without light exposure, Multiband 6 radio control and Bluetooth connectivity ensure accurate timekeeping, and Triple G Resist construction provides protection against shock, centrifugal force, and vibration. Meanwhile, the Casio Watches app expands functionality with world time for approximately 300 cities.
This is obviously just the beginning of AI use in watch design, but as brands continue to embrace the tech, there’s no telling what kinds of innovations we’ll see. And as long as there’s a human touch, we’re excited to see what the future holds.
