You could say a dive watch is only as good as the explorer who wears it on his wrist. Well, for DOXA’s legendary SUB 300T, that explorer is fictional (although Jacques Cousteau was a pretty big fan too). After receiving one as a gift in the 1970s, author Clive Cussler decided the titular swashbuckling hero in his Dirk Pitt adventure series would sport the orange-dialed diver on his wrist. Like Indiana Jones and his stetson hat, Pitt never went anywhere without his 300T. Now, DOXA has released a special Clive Cussler Edition of the timepiece.

Prior to his passing back in 2020, Cussler had written 25 novels in the Dirk Pitt series, which dates back to 1973. You may have also seen Pitt on the big screen in 2005’s Sahara, starring Matthew McConaughey as the hero, who does don the 300T throughout the film. In his life, Cussler was an ocean enthusiast in his own right, discovering dozens of shipwrecks through his own underwater explorations with his non-profit company NUMA.

The original SUB 300T ran its course from 1967 until DOXA ceased operations in 1980. The timepiece was innovative for its saw-edged bezel for grip, oversized minute hand, a large quantity of lume, and, of course, its orange dial, which provided better underwater visibility. DOXA was revived in 2001, debuting with none other than the 300T. This special edition you see here sports some fun features, including a distressed look on the stainless steel material, a vintage compass design on the beige dial, and a caseback inscribed with names of shipwrecks and artifacts that were discovered by Cussler. For the date window, the numbers 7, 15, and 31 are colored red to mark the author’s birthday (good thing he wasn’t born in 1932). The movement, 42.5mm case size, and 1,200m dive rating are all the same as a typical 300T Professional. Rather than a straightforward homage, think of this more as a reimagining, as though the watch were found at the bottom of the ocean.

While it’s not a limited edition, each piece is given its own unique number on the side of the bezel. You can get your own SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition for $2,690 from DOXA’s website.
