Christopher Ward’s C1 Jump Hour Dusk Makes You Rethink Your Reservations About Red Dials

Christopher Ward decided to remind all of us that it’s not simply hopping on the recent trend of new jump-hour watches with its latest release. Debuting back in 2011, the C1 Jump Hour actually sought to fix a flaw with traditional calibers. Developed by then-master watchmaker Johannes Jahnke, the JJ01 automatic movement evenly distributed power across the full 60 minutes for an instantaneous numeral change exactly on the hour, instead of building up torque right before the hour change.

The C1 was revived last year with its Mk V iteration, and the community has been smitten with the Noon Blue and Dusk Gold colorways available so far. But with its latest limited edition in Dusk Red, CW may have actually outdone itself.

A COMPLICATION WITH A CAUSE

There’s a reason the JJ01 carries the weight it does inside Christopher Ward’s story. It was the brand’s first in-house developed module, born out of Jahnke’s frustration with jump hours that never quite fired at the right moment.

That same mechanical approach later informed the FS01 caliber powering the CW’s Bel Canto, a watch that shifted the brand’s trajectory. The JJ01 has also since been used by Fears in their Brunswick 40.5, which tells you something about the module’s staying power.

Turning Red

Red dials are a gamble. We’ve all seen them done with too much conviction, ending up as loud statement pieces that rarely find themselves in your regular rotation. CW sidesteps that pitfall here with the red on the Dusk Limited Edition, which aims for a warm crimson that’s kept in check by the neutral gray outer section of the four-tier dial construction.

That four-tier layout is the real architectural achievement of the Mk V in general: a stamped center disc with 27 concentric circles, a polished circular-brushed metal ring rising above it, a sapphire ring printed with minute markers, and then the sapphire minute hand sitting above all of it with a unique stepped design, a first for Christopher Ward. The hour aperture gets its own treatment with circular brushing, polished facets, a Super-LumiNova inner ring, and a Globolight ceramic block behind the retro-futuristic numerals. The lume placement is really special on this watch, applied minimally so you can clearly see the hour numeral and minute hand for easy legibility.

The sapphire dial ring’s translucency lets the entire hidden hour disc charge in low light, so the lume legibility at night actually glows.

The Usual Specs

Just like the previous versions of the Mk V, the Dusk LE sports a dressy 39mm Light-catcher stainless steel case with 47.3mm lug-to-lug and 14mm thick. The finishing alternates between brushed flanks, chamfered lugs, and a polished bezel, with the caseback echoing that contrast through heavy sandblasting and fine polishing. It also displays the 12-hour stops of the jump hour wheel, which is a nice touch for anyone wanting to show off the movement.

The one honest reservation worth flagging is the water resistance rated at 30m. For a watch this well-executed, a bump to 50m would go a long way toward removing any hesitation about wearing it daily.

Finally, the watch is adorned with a Consort steel bracelet, but a fine Italian leather strap is also available if you want to take it in a dressier direction.

Christopher Ward C1 Jump Hour Mk V Dusk Limited Edition

Christopher Ward’s C1 Jump Hour Mk V Dusk Limited Edition is a 150-piece run that finally gets the red dial right, pairing an warm crimson with the brand’s impressive four-tier dial construction and the JJ01 jump hour module that put CW on the watchmaking map back in 2011. At $3,165, it’s one of the more compelling arguments for the jump hour complication at this price point.
