When it comes to turning your iPhone into a full-fledged mobile console, the controls have always been the weak link for us. Mashing a pane of glass where a D-pad should be is no way to play Mario. 8BitDo teased a smarter idea at CES back in January, and now it’s finally here in the form of the FlipPad.

Famicom Roots, Game Boy Posture
8BitDo has been building retro-inspired tech like this since 2013, when it launched as a Shenzhen-based love letter to the Famicom. Eventually, the brand ended up actually earning official licensing from the likes of Nintendo, Microsoft, and Apple. The FlipPad is easily one of our favorites products from the rand to date.

It’s pretty clever setup, plugging straight into the USB-C port and folding up over the lower chunk of the screen. This mean you get a proper clicky D-pad, ABXY face buttons, Start and Select, and four shoulder keys, all of which are also arranged for portrait play.

The Hinge Is the Headline
Now for the part that actually separates the FlipPad from every other mobile gamepad we’ve covered. The entire control deck rides on a flip-phone-style hinge, so when a call interrupts your gaming session, you swing the pad open, deal with IRL on the full screen, and snap it back down to resume game play.

The hinge is rated for over 6,000 open-and-close cycles, while the USB-C connector is good for more than 10,000 insertions. There’s no battery to charge and no Bluetooth to pair, either. That wired connection also translates to instant button response and feedback.
