Picking a smartwatch can be a daunting task. With more options available now than ever before, you may be tempted to go with the more ubiquitous models from Apple or Google. However, it would be in your best interest for you to explore some niche, tool-focused wearables from brands that are really cornering the market in that regard. Suunto has risen the ranks to become one of the finest smartwatch makers in the world, with its range of rugged fitness trackers, GPS hiking watches, and even hybrid models up its sleeve. However, its latest top-tier smartwatch, the Vertical, improves upon previous models while offering some new features as well.

Blending the durability of the Peak Pro running series with the size of the top-shelf Baro, Suunto’s Vertical Adventure Watch gives users the best of both worlds. It features over 95 sports modes to the Peak Pro’s 80 and includes shaded topographic maps in three styles which can now be accessed offline, WiFi capability for downloading regional maps, on-device weather pages, continuous 24/7 heart rate monitoring, and over 50 3rd-party app options, such as Strava Live Segments.

All these features have now been given some upgraded resolution when compared to the Peak Pro, bumped from 240×240 to 280×280, and a larger 1.4-inch screen. The Vertical comes with two military-tested case options: stainless steel and grade 5 titanium — both 49mm in diameter and given a silicone strap. While Suunto already boasts some of the best battery life in the game, the titanium version of the Vertical now comes with a solar-charging option as well for 85 hours of GPS usage (60 hours with non-solar). There’s also a new screen-based flashlight for emergency situations.
