Since 2021, expert photographers looking for Sony’s top-shelf mirrorless camera have opted for the A1 model, and today, the electronics brand announced the second generation of the flagship model. If you’re looking for major upgrades, you won’t be blown away. However, for $6,499, the A1 II still looks to be a reliable option for those not looking for frills, just integrity when they shoot.
Better or Just Newer?
Acknowledging that some of the less affordable options have elements worth adopting, the A1 II pulls from the A9 III with the overall body design for better ergonomics and improved grip, a speed boost button, and a pre-capture function.
Boasting a 50.1-MP full-frame sensor like before, with 30fps capability at full resolution, the A1 II can also shoot 8K video at 30p or 4K at 120p. The camera also features modernized components such as AI-boosted autofocus, integrated image stabilization, and the tilt display screen found in other models.
The combination of its photography speed and video performance allows this to remain at the top of the Alpha lineup, albeit with only marginal updates over the outgoing model. However, in a world where camera makers are pushing the envelope with interesting features and functions, the stoic A1 II is a breath of fresh air, especially if you’re serious about photography.
A New Lens Too
While the A1 II comes lensless, Sony has also introduced the new FE 28-70mm f/2 GM zoom, which will get let you get to your max aperture much faster while compromising on the wider end. Weighing an impressive 2.02lbs, the lens is lighter than the similar EOS R offering from Canon while also being a couple-hundred dollars cheaper at $2,899.
