As smartphones get more complicated and our data becomes more readily available to the highest bidder, consumers are starting to feel the impact of this unfettered tech and are looking for something different. Drops like rabbit’s r1 and Humane’s AI Pin have demonstrated that there’s certainly a demand for an alternative, and now the Swiss company Punkt. are combining a stripped-back design with transparent data protection in the MC02 smartphone.

Before we get into the big draw here (the privacy and pared-down design), let’s run through the tech specs; it’s powered by 6G of RAM and a 5,500 mAh battery, boasting 128GB of expandable storage, three 64MP rear cameras, a 24MP front camera, and a 6.7-inch HD display. It’s also capable of wireless charging and comes with 5G and WiFi 6 connectivity.

Working alongside fellow Swiss company Apostrophy handling the minimalist OS, Punkt. has designed this smartphone to give you uninterrupted access to the most important features (email, messaging, calendars, etc.) while keeping your privacy and data protected. This means no apps or sites will have access to your data for advertising-related surveillance commerce and data capture. On top of that, it’s equipped with a built-in VPN, so your activity is protected, and you’re safe from potential attacks when connected to public WiFi. All of your data will be stored under Swiss jurisdiction and in the Data & Carbon Ledger, a feature that shows you the risk level of each app and your environmental imprint of app use on the smartphone.

The Punkt. MC02 smartphone is available now for $749 and ships as an unlocked 5G phone; it also comes with a 2-year warranty, access to the company’s repair services, and a Punkt. SIM card. You’ll also have to shell out around $17 monthly for Apostrophy’s data protection, but the first 12 months are included with your purchase.
