While some of you may remember the good old days of PlayStation Move, the birth of virtual reality has led Sony’s elite gaming subsidiary to greener pastures. This was made clear with the release of PS VR, which hit the market no more than a month before the PlayStation 4 Pro appeared on shelves back in 2016. Ultimately, it proved to be as immersive as consumers expected, with an incredibly sleek look, to boot. Now, a bit over five years later and to the delight of gamers and escapists everywhere, PlayStation has delivered the first look at its VR2 headset.
With a single look at the latest reveal, it’s clear as to where the gadgeteers garnered inspiration from — and they didn’t need to look too far for it, either. Boasting a striking resemblance to the family of PS5 products, the clean white VR2 headset has a unique “orb look,” intended to encapsulate the 360-degree view that players encounter upon using a VR headset. Regardless of its shape, the latest headset looks to be suitable for anyone, allowing users to adjust the lens distance between their eyes to make sure they aren’t missing out on any in-game action.
Now, it’s time to put the design aside and delve into the tech specs to discover what makes this device so impressive. For starters, it is capable of eye-tracking for a more lifelike experience. It is also equipped with motor-powered, responsive headset vibrations, akin to the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback. Lastly, what puts the VR2 over the top is its unrivaled 4K HDR display and its use of the incredibly immersive Tempest 3D AudioTech, the latter of which adapts mid-game based on your body movements.
While there is no formal release or pricing information as of now, we simply can’t wait to see what else Sony has in store for its next-gen virtual reality experience. If you’re interested in taking on different realities, take a deeper look at what PlayStation is brewing up on its website.
