Montblanc’s Digital Paper Tablet Brings Luxury Materials to the E Ink World

For over a century, Montblanc has approached each of its writing utensils on the idea that the perfect pen can elevate your thoughts. From the iconic Meisterstück fountain pen that’s become a boardroom staple since 1924 to its expansion into luxury timepieces and leather goods, the German maison has consistently combined sophistication with innovation.

Now, they’re taking that same philosophy into uncharted territory with the Digital Paper notepad — a premium E Ink tablet that costs nearly twice what you’d pay for comparable devices from Amazon or Rakuten.

Luxury Meets E Ink

This isn’t Montblanc’s first digital rodeo. Their 2016 Augmented Paper was an interesting experiment as a digital-analog hybrid notepad. But the new Digital Paper feels like they’ve finally cracked the code on translating their analog expertise into pixels. The device centers around what Montblanc does best: the writing experience itself. Three interchangeable tips — Linen, Matte, and Smooth — each simulate different paper textures to actually elevate the writing experience.

Weighing just over a pound and measuring roughly 7.5″ x 8.7″, the aluminum-bodied device features a sleek leather sidebar that doubles as both aesthetic accent and functional pen dock. The digital stylus, which was modeled after the vintage Meisterstück, features over 4,000 levels of pressure sensitivity and charges wirelessly when magnetically attached to the device. It’s clear Montblanc spent as much time perfecting the haptic feedback as they did the visual design.

Beyond the Premium Price Tag

At $905, the Digital Paper costs significantly more than, say, the $449 Kindle Scribe, but the comparison isn’t entirely fair. Those devices prioritize functionality over form, while Montblanc approaches this from the opposite direction. The 64GB of storage, 3,740mAh battery, and comprehensive app ecosystem (supporting both iOS and Android) handle the tech requirements capably, but what you’re really paying for is the materials and manufacturing precision that echoes their sophisticated writing instruments.

The company offers the tablet in three colorways — Mystery Black, Cool Grey, and Elixir Gold — each paired with optional leather folio covers that add another $205 to the equation. Replacement pens cost $275, while tip refills run $40 for a pack of eight.
