Light Built the Minimalist Flip Phone the Razr Never Got to Become

Every few months we catch ourselves eyeing our smartphone like it’s a bad roommate. Brooklyn-based Light has spent a decade building phones for exactly that feeling, most recently the touchscreen-equipped Light Phone III.

But apparently even that was too much phone for some of its users, who kept asking for the same thing: something they’d never be mistaken for scrolling on. So Light went and built it, unveiling the Light Flip, the brand’s first-ever flip phone.

The Flip Is the Feature

Here’s a fun bit of trivia: Light CEO Kaiwei Tang worked on the original Motorola Razr before founding the company. Twenty-some years later, he’s picking up where the form factor left off, because let’s be honest, the flip phone never really evolved past 2005. It just got abandoned.

The Light Flip leans all the way into the format. There’s no exterior screen whatsoever, just a small notification LED, so checking anything requires the deliberate act of flipping it open. Snap it shut and your technology literally goes away. Folded, it’s about the footprint of a deck of cards, weighs roughly as much as a hockey puck, and even sports a keychain loop. The plastic chassis keeps costs down and comes in six colors, including a very un-Light red, pink, and yellow.

Dumb Phone, Really Good Hardware

Now, the reason most current flip phones end up in junk drawers is that they’re slow, fragile, and unsupported. Light’s answer is to spec this thing like it matters: 5G, a MediaTek chipset, 128GB of storage, 6GB of RAM, USB-C, and IP54 resistance.

And then there’s the enthusiast bait. A 3.5mm headphone jack and a user-replaceable 1,800mAh battery, on a phone, in 2026. That’s pretty ridiculous, but in the best possible way.

LightOS, Minus the Noise

Inside the clamshell sits a 2.8-inch monochrome OLED driven entirely by a T9 keypad and D-pad (no touchscreen here). The software is the same LightOS as the Phone III, covering calls, texts, music, podcasts, directions, and notes, with predictive T9 and voice-to-text softening the button-mashing. No browser, no social media, no email, and with no NFC chip, no tap-to-pay either.

The wild card is Light’s recently launched developer program, which lets the community build and share open-source tools for the platform.
