The world of tech is in an exciting place right now; between AI, foldable smartphones, and transparent displays, the next decade is shaping up to be even more impactful than the last. We’ve seen concepts of this new wave of tech in the 2010s, with Lenovo debuting a transparent smartphone concept back in 2015 and, more recently, LG’s transparent OLED TV that debuted at CES 2024. Now, Lenovo is back with the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept, a transparent laptop straight from the future.

This concept is built with a borderless 17.3-inch Micro-LED transparent display with 1000 nits of brightness, which is 55% transparent when turned off, and completely transparent when turned on. The keyboard/drawing board is also transparent and comes with a pen that’s designed with creatives in mind, doubling as a tablet for creative work. Also, the transparency can be adjusted to reveal more (or less) of the space behind the screen, which means Lenovo is infusing some Augmented Reality (AR) into the design.

Working alongside the transparent display, the laptop is capable of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content, allowing it to interact with the physical world and provide digital information by identifying objects placed behind the display using AI object recognition (so if you place a cup behind the laptop screen, it’ll recognize it as a cup). It’s clear that Lenovo is positioning this as more than just a novelty concept, and highlighting the features that help artists work in a new way. And while we likely won’t see any transparent laptops for the public in the next year or two, we’re definitely getting closer, and Lenovo is setting itself up to be one of the first to pull it off.

There’s no official word on a public release for the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept, but Lenovo will be debuting a working prototype at the Mobile World Congress event.
