For years, drone photography has suffered from the same fundamental limitation: you can only capture what’s directly in front of the camera. Miss the action happening behind you, and it’s gone forever. Insta360’s new Antigravity A1 throws that constraint out the window with the world’s first 8K 360-degree drone, designed to capture everything around you simultaneously. The Shenzhen-based company, which built its reputation perfecting 360-degree action cameras like the X5, has applied nearly a decade of immersive imaging expertise to create what might be the most intuitive flying camera yet.

A Different Kind of Drone
Insta360 engineered the A1 from the ground up around dual fisheye lenses (one mounted above, one below) that work together to stitch 8K footage in real time. The result is an “invisible drone effect” where the aircraft disappears entirely from your footage, leaving only the sky, horizon, and everything in between. It’s the same seamless stitching technology that made Insta360’s action cameras popular, but now applied to aerial storytelling.
Weighing in at just 8.8oz, the A1 slips under regulatory thresholds in most countries, meaning no licensing headaches for recreational pilots. But the real breakthrough is how you fly it. The included Grip controller ditches traditional twin-stick controls for something closer to a Nintendo Wii remote. Point where you want to go, pull the trigger, and the drone flies in that direction. Meanwhile, the Vision goggles let you look around independently, separating flight direction from viewing angle in a way that feels surprisingly natural.

Your Eyes In the Sky
Merging the worlds of drones and VR, the equipped goggles create an immersive experience that levereges the A1’s 360-degree feed, letting you turn your head freely while maintaining course. It’s like floating through the air with superhuman peripheral vision. The goggles even include an external screen so your friends can watch too.
Flight time clocks in at 29 minutes per battery with a transmission range stretching up to around 4.3 miles. The drone includes standard safety features like return-to-home and obstacle avoidance, but Insta360 added an unexpected payload detection. If the A1 senses extra weight that shouldn’t be there, it refuses to take off, proactively preventing misuse that could help with regulatory acceptance.

Post-Flight Magic
In terms of editing, Insta360 has seemingly thought of everything. Using the 360-degree sphere, you can reframe shots after landing to create tracking shots, aerial shots, or close-ups, all from the same clip. Essentially, a single 10-second flight can become multiple distinct shots, each telling a different part of your story.
The creative possibilities extend beyond basic reframing. Dynamic camera moves, tiny planet effects, and horizon flips all become possible in post, opening up cinematic techniques typically reserved for expensive productions. For content creators tired of missing the perfect angle, the A1’s capture-everything-first approach could be liberating.
