Do you remember how satisfying it was to end a (good or bad) call by flipping your phone shut? Well, Google is feeling nostalgic too, and has officially entered the foldable smartphone arena. The company just teased the highly anticipated Google Pixel Fold, giving us a sneak peek of what’s to come on May 10th at Google’s annual I/O conference, where the collapsable phone will be revealed, among other important announcements.
Similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold debut in 2019, the short teaser showcases the phone folding, but with a screen that’s noticeably larger while still maintaining a relatively small form factor on the body. Sources at CNBC reported on exclusive information in April stating Google believes this will be its “most durable hinge on a foldable phone.”
The Pixel Fold will likely have the same processor, Google’s Tensor G2 chip, as the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Not a negative by any means, but it was met with a mixed reception after temperature and battery life concerns came up. CNBC also reported that the Google Pixel Fold will have longer battery life this time around – allegedly up to 24 hours (and 72 hours in low-power mode). The cameras are really what fans of the Pixel series are after, though. And the Google Pixel Fold’s cameras look to be an updated version of the Pixel 7 Pro’s, which are top-of-the-line. Fans also enjoy Google’s tight ecosystem and ever-improving smartphone technology, which make the Google Pixel Fold a worthy competitor against the Galaxy Fold (and other folding smartphones).
Speculators and insider information estimate the price to be around $1700, but we’ll have to wait and see. The Google Pixel Fold and pertinent details will officially be available on May 10th at the 2023 Google I/O conference.
