As Fujifilm celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, we’ve already seen some notable models from the Japanese camera brand, including some attractive limited-edition colorways of the Instax Mini Evo and a mirrorless X-T50 with a film simulator dial — the first of its kind. Their latest release heads back to the X series for the line’s lightest option yet, and it’s about half the price of the X-T50.

Fujifilm X-M5 Basics

The X series consists of mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses, and they’re usually rather pricey. However, the new X-M5 is not only super lightweight at just 13oz but it also carries a sticker price of just $800. This allows budding photographers or vloggers to really get their feet wet in the X range of top-shelf mirrorless cameras without paying top-shelf mirrorless camera prices.

Available in all black or silver-and-black, the X-M5 does lack the in-body image stabilization of some more expensive models but this will do just fine for many who have just settled for their smartphone cameras (which also cost upwards of $800 after all). With the mirrorless camera, you’ll get a 26.1-megapixel 23.5mm x 15.6mm X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor — much larger than your standard phone sensor with the ability to capture more — with the standard X-Processor 5 that features AI-boosted autofocus.

A Nostalgic Touch for Half the Price

Fans of the X-T50 will be happy to hear that this X-M5 will also feature the film simulator dial in a much cheaper package. This dial provides you with a few preset modes but also allows you to select a trio of customizable modes from its 20 total options. These modes instantly change the result of what you’re shooting and don’t require you to do any editing.

Also like the X-T50, you’ll find the same 6.2K/30P video capability with a fold-out LCD screen. Better yet, you’ll get to work with Fujifilm’s first-ever three-mic system for recording as well, with four options for sound directivity and noise reduction options.
