Fresh off of its big 90th-anniversary year in 2024, Fujifilm might not be coming with new limited-edition colorways or industry firsts but nevertheless has some tricks up its sleeve. For its latest release, the Japanese brand takes its medium-format GFX line of digital cameras and adds a fixed lens for the first time.

Lighter Than You Think
Eliminating the need to select between different lenses, the new GFX100RF adds simplicity to the GFX line, aiming at competitors such as Leica with its Q3. With the simplicity comes a lighter body as well, at just 1.62lbs, thanks in part to a top plate made of a single block of aluminum and a more compact build. In fact, the camera is much more of a point-and-shoot option, with the portability of a full-frame rather than a typical medium format. For instance, Fujifilm’s previous GFX100SII clocked in at 3.66lbs — more than double this new model.

Fixed Lens, No Problem
Like previous GFX100 models, the RF has a 43.8 × 32.9mm 102-MP sensor with an X-Processor 5 engine. However, the fixed lens is why you’re here. It’s a 35mm lens (equal to a full-frame 28mm lens) with a f/4 max aperture and minimum focusing distance of 20cm, which lets you do more with this camera than a standard medium format. According to Fujifilm, the focal length can be “digitally extended” to 45mm, 63mm, and 80mm. On the other hand, users might miss the in-body image stabilization they got with previous models — but that’s also partially why they’re double the weight.

Dialing It In
Along with the headlining features, this camera also gets a brand-new Aspect Ratio dial, letting you “quickly select a frame shape to match your creative vision.” There are nine different options, like the popular 5:4, 3:2, and 1:1, but also “ones that define Fujifilm’s legendary past” like 17:6, 3:4, and 65:24. To help you visualize these aspect ratios, the GFX100RF also has a hi-res 5.76-million dot electric viewfinder to go along with the 3.15-inch tilt-type LCD touchscreen. Likewise, there’s a built-in four-stop ND filter, which has never been featured in the GFX line before.
