Both drones and smart home security cameras have been on the rise over the last few years, becoming increasingly capable and high-tech while being delivered in ever-more-compact packages. And as part of today’s Amazon Devices & Services release, the online retail juggernaut has revealed that it has combined these two spaces to create what it’s calling “the world’s first flying indoor security camera for your home” with the Ring Always Home Camera.
Offering a 120° field of view and shooting in 1440×1440 HD video, the Always Home Camera can utilize custom pre-set flight paths, monitoring up to 50 specified areas on pre-determined patrol schedules that can be as long as five minutes, though the flying camera can also use contact sensors and motion detection to automatically deploy itself should a potential intruder be detected. The drone cam also takes off from and lands in a wireless charging station that keeps the device juiced up in between patrols. On top of sporting live in-flight remote monitoring, this camera — which is designed for indoor use only — is also equipped with a built-in LED light for illuminating dark settings, smart object recognition that can sense new obstacles and then return itself to its charging dock, multiple prospectives, and the ability to pair with existing alarms from Ring. What’s more, the mobile nature of the camera allows it to cover markedly more ground than even traditional multi-camera setups, giving it a pretty incredible value.
After first being shown off in the fall of 2020, Amazon has finally released the Ring Always Home Camera to the public with pricing set at $250. Currently, the model is only being offered via an exclusive invitation from Amazon, though general sales are expected to open in the coming weeks.
