Vollebak is one of those unique companies that manages to outdo themselves with each release, coming out with futuristic apparel that uses material that’s just not used in traditional clothing. Between dropping the world’s first graphene jacket and the 100 Year line of fireproof gear, Vollebak has carved out its own lane that really no other company can compete in. And now they’re back with The Firefly Jacket, a color-changing shell that uses phosphorescent and fluorescent compounds.
This Italian-made jacket is built from a single fabric composed of five alternating layers, using a translucent, polyamide mesh for the first, third, and fifth layers, and two color-shifting membranes (one phosphorescent and the other fluorescent) for the second and fourth layers. Inside, the jacket has a copper color, but if you’re outside in cloudy or low-light conditions, it starts to glow. The real change comes when you’re outside in the light, where the jacket turns orange as the fluorescent and phosphorescent membranes absorb and re-emit UV light from the sun. You get more colors if you use a high-powered flashlight, which results in a green glow, or a blacklight, which gives you a fluorescent yellow. The jacket is also completely waterproof, boasting a fully seam-sealed construction with waterproof zippers, so you can tackle the rain in glowing style.
Not only does the jacket naturally react to light and change color on its own, but you can “write” on it as well. Vollebak says the best way to do this is in a dark room, using your phone or a flashlight to draw on the jacket like you would with a pen and paper. The light should instantly leave a glowing trail on the jacket, and you’ll get thicker lines with wider beams.
