Vans Just Added Gore-Tex and Vibram to Their Most Technical Trail Shoe Yet

When Vans launched the Crosspath a year ago, it was clear that the skate sneaker brand was ready to make the leap to serious trail shoes. Now, they’ve doubled down on their outdoor prowess with the Crosspath XC Gore-Tex.

By partnering with Gore-Tex and Vibram, Vans has essentially taken their most progressive all-terrain sneaker and given it the kind of technical upgrade that puts it in direct conversation with dedicated trail footwear.

Gore-Tex Goes Invisible

The hiking shoe’s standout feature is its implementation of Gore-Tex Invisible Fit technology, which basically bonds the waterproof membrane directly to the upper rather than using the bootie construction that other hiking brands might employ. This maintains the original Crosspath’s fit while improving the waterproofing and breathability. Likewise, RapidWeld reinforcement in high-wear areas adds durability in a lower profile. A lot of town-to-trail sneakers have a problem with bulk, but Vans is aiming to avoid it.

The upper itself maintains those classic Vans design cues — the iconic Sidestripe and Off the Wall heel tab — while incorporating ripstop fabrics and suede overlays that can actually handle abuse. You also get easy-on pull tabs and a speed-lacing system with clip closure, which have seen a increase in use among more recent trail shoes.

Vibram Brings the Grip

Perhaps more impressive is the custom Vibram XS Trek Evo outsole, which is a significant upgrade over the original Crosspath’s tread pattern. This is a purpose-built sole designed for multi-surface traction that can transition seamlessly from wet city streets to looser trail conditions. The 7mm heel-to-toe drop keeps things relatively flat for better ground feel, while UltraCush foam cushioning maintains comfort during longer hikes.

At 14.35oz, the Crosspath XC strikes a reasonable balance between protection and nimbleness. That’s lighter than most dedicated hiking shoes but heavier than your average skate shoe.
