Over Fifty Years Later, Timberland’s 6-Inch Boot Gets Its Most Luxurious Update Yet

The folks at the Abington Shoe Company must’ve known what they were doing when they originally designed the Timberland 6-Inch Boot back in 1973. Eventually leading to the entire company to be renamed “Timberland,” the waterproof work boots pioneered the use of injection molded soles and became immensely popular, becoming a cultural cornerstone over the past five-plus decades.

While the Waterproof Boot hasn’t changed much over the years, Timberland has always found ways to evolve the shoe in subtle ways with new colorways, eco-friendly materials, and updated waterproofing. Now, the New Hampshire-based footwear brand is bringing an elevated touch to its flagship silhouette.

An Icon, Refined

For the new Luxe Waterproof Boot, Timberland doesn’t abandon what made the original so iconic. That familiar silhouette remains intact, with the same padded collar, lugged outsole profile, and six-inch height. But Timberland has made some calculated improvements that push this boot into more refined territory.

The most notable upgrade here is the Horween leather upper. For those unfamiliar, Horween Leather Company has been tanning premium hides in Chicago since 1905, supplying leather to heritage brands like Alden and Filson. Getting your hands on Horween material isn’t cheap, and Timberland isn’t being coy about it, with the tannery’s stamp sitting proudly inside the boot. Available in the classic wheat nubuck or black, the leather brings a smoother, more supple feel compared to standard Timberlands while still keeping the rugged look that’s made the boot a cultural icon.

The attention extends to the construction. Leather laces replace the typical nylon ones, and there’s an upgraded leather welt that makes resoling easier down the line if you’re planning on wearing these boots into the ground. Speaking of which, Vibram rubber outsoles will give you amazing traction. The material is ubiquitous in hiking boots and will get you the same kind of range here as well.

Function Stays Front and Center

Beyond the aesthetic upgrades, the Luxe Waterproof Boot maintains the same functional elements that’s made the original a workhorse, like full seam-sealed construction to keep water out and a fully gusseted tongue to prevent moisture from sneaking in through the lacing system. Inside, you get leather lining, a padded leather collar for comfort around the ankle, and Timberland’s Anti-Fatigue footbed technology — borrowed from their PRO work line — that absorbs shock and returns energy. The midsole is rubber, the footbed features that same premium Timberland leather lining, and the 100% recycled PET laces add a small eco-conscious touch.

The Luxe Waterproof Boot embraces the implications that culture has been giving it for decades now, and gives an ultimate premium version that you likely won’t want to wear to the job site.
