Snow Peak Made Keen’s Hyperport Sandal Even Better With a Stealthy All-Black Makeover

Founded in 1958, Snow Peak spent its first few decades earning a cult following for items like crimpon spikes for climbing and, a bit later, its camping grills. It’s only recently that the Japanese outdoor gear brand has been venturing into footwear, led by collabs with Danner and New Balance. But now, for the first time, they’ve joined forces with one of the most innovative hiking shoe brands around, putting their own spin on Keen’s Hyperport sandal.

FROM NEWPORT TO HYPERPORT

Keen’s original Newport, launched in 2003, basically created the closed-toe hybrid sandal category as a water shoe with actual trail credibility. The Hyperport H2, a 2024 ISPO Award winner, is the brand’s modern evolution to that formula with the same protective rubber toe bumper, same generous toe box built around Keen’s Original Fit last, but the midsole gets an upgrade. Called the Kalibrate, it’s a super-soft injected foam unit that sits notably taller than the Newport’s platform and performs more like a max-cushion trail runner underfoot.

A BLACKED-OUT BRIEF

Snow Peak’s contribution to the design is stealth, which you may have expected. Monochrome and minimalist, the adult version is an all-black “SP Triple Black” colorway built on washable polyester webbing with a quick-dry lining. The branding touches are subtle with an asterisk motif patch on the upper and a Snow Peak corporate logo pin at the heel.

There’s also a kids version, which pulls its palette from Snow Peak’s Hozuki Lantern (named after the traditional Japanese ground cherry plant) for something a bit more expressive.

WET AND READY

The “H2” designation is Keen’s notation for water-readiness, and the Hyperport is arguably the best at this for the trail. The Aquagrip rubber outsole runs multi-directional lugs specifically tuned for slick surfaces like wet rocks, docks, and stream crossings. You also get PFAS-free water repellent treatment (Keen has been entirely PFAS-free since 2018) and odor control via natural probiotics. The bungee cinch closure and stretchy mesh heel give you the ability to fine-tune fit without stopping for long, and at 11.11oz per shoe, it won’t weight you down much.
