Ray-Ban Makes the Wayfarer Sustainable by Using Bio-Based Acetate

The almighty Wayfarer silhouette has been a staple in the world of eyewear since it first hit the scene in the 1950s, and Ray-Ban is now doing a favor for the world that made its timeless shades so famous. In an effort to reach a more sustainable future, the American-Italian brand has given the sunglasses a bio-based update.

Considering there’s no way to alter such an iconic pair of shades cosmetically (except for, ahem, the New Wayfarer), Ray-Ban managed to do so from a compositional standpoint. The reimagined sunglasses are crafted from 67% bio-based materials, including renewable sources like cotton, wood pulp, cereals, beet, and sugar cane. With sustainability becoming a major talking point in the world of fashion, it only makes sense for such an esteemed manufacturer to do its part.

The latest take on the Wayfarer comes available in a handful of colorways, including two classic choices (green lenses rounded out with either Havana or Black frames) and a trio of stylish striped options (red, blue, and grey). Needless to say, any pair you pick up is a win-win situation, as it’s impossible to go wrong with wearing a pair of Wayfarers and helping the planet all in one purchase.

If you’ve been eyeing some high-quality sunglasses, you can never go wrong with a pair from Ray-Ban, let alone its most classic option. The heritage brand’s Original Wayfarer Bio-Acetate is available on its online store now and is priced from $198.
