Last year, Porsche Design debuted the limited-edition P’8951 Sunglasses inspired by the classic Porsche 911 sports car. Part of its Iconic series, these shades continued the brand’s knack for transposing the German vehicles’ design language to other types of gear — as we’ve seen before with everything from wristwatches to headphones. Now, Porsche Design has followed these sunglasses up with a new pair taking design cues from the legendary 911 Turbo S.

Porsche Design’s Sleek History

In the 1960s and ‘70s, Porsche, the car company, was on a tear. Having launched the 911 in 1963, the German automaker was looking to revolutionize how we thought about sports cars. In 1970, Porsche then began its historic run at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a win with 917KH Coupé. The marque currently has 19 total wins — the most of any in history.

In 1972, Ferdinand Porsche decided to expand the Porsche name with the first Porsche Design studio. Launching with the Chronograph I, the firm infused the timepiece with the automaker’s simple, functional, and elegant design principles. 1978 saw the debut of the brand’s first-ever sunglasses, the P’8478 aviators, and since then, Porsche Design has continued to push the boundaries of what to expect with stylish yet functional eyewear.

Porsche Design P’8952 Sunglasses Basics

An evolution of the classic 911 nameplate, the Turbo S started cropping up in the ‘90s and eventually got its own spot in the permanent collection in 2010, balancing performance with both weight and aerodynamics in a way that had never been done before. These vehicles now serve as the inspiration for the new P’8952 Sunglasses — falling in line with Porsche Design’s alphanumeric naming convention for their sunnies — which sport a similarly aerodynamic silhouette with curves that take after the air intakes of the Turbo S.

Like previous models, the square-shaped P’8952 features surprisingly lightweight aluminum frames, now paired with the high-performance RXP polyamide for contrasting surface textures and coloring. As for the temples, they’ve been seamlessly integrated into the frame for a more unibody aesthetic. Meanwhile, the dark lenses come equipped with Porsche Design’s VISION DRIVE polarized technology.
