In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Pegasus is Nike’s de facto running shoe king. Debuting in 1983, the sneaker came out following the big ‘70s running boom where footwear became more specialized. As an answer, the athletic giant made a product for every runner, combining proven tech like its iconic Waffle Trainer soles with the cushioning from the Cortez. Over the past four decades, the Pegasus has evolved…a lot. And after a year’s worth of hype, a new top-shelf version of the flagship runner has now officially dropped. We’d like to introduce you to the Pegasus Premium.

Promising to be the most responsive Pegasus ever, the Premium iteration takes the DNA of its progenitor and packs it with three types of tech. First, and most noticeably, you get an Air Zoom unit that not only stretches from forefoot to heel but gets a sculpted shape for the first time ever. Designed to match your foot’s natural contours, this isn’t only for show but offers just the right amount of springiness so you can increase your speed potential. The new unit will debut in a bright red color that looks almost futuristic. Headlining the triple-layer midsole, the Air Zoom is paired with full-length ZoomX foam for energy return and ReactX foam, the latter of which joined the Pegasus lineup for the first time with the Pegasus 41. Serving as the shoe’s foundation, ReactX is notable for being 13% more responsive than the standard React foam for a smoother and more balanced ride.

Up top, the Pegasus Premium sports a breathable, “lighter-than-air” engineered mesh upper that won’t weigh you down while keeping your feet cool and supported so you can make it all the way across the finish line. Underneath, Nike gave the shoe a modified version of its famed waffle outsole with high-abrasion rubber for bolstered traction. Launching in the Summit White/Bright Crimson colorway, the Premium weighs around 11.5oz (US men’s size 10) and has a 10mm heel drop.
