In 1982, Nike introduced what would go on to become one of the most iconic sneakers of all time with the original Air Force 1. Approximately 30-years-after the release of the AF1, the Kilgore-designed silhouette would be recreated as a winterized duckboot known as the Lunar Force 1 that gained improved warmth and better weather resistance and durability, all while maintaining much of the original Air Force 1’s iconic style. And with winter right around the corner, Nike has decided to give the LF1s a modern refresh with its new Baroque Brown/Black colorway.
This new Lunar Force 1 variant is crafted around a set of water-repellent Baroque Brown leather uppers that have been paired with an oversized padded tongue that wraps around the ankle, blocking out the cold and increasing warmth. This area is furthered by the use of synthetic insulation throughout. The rubber star pattern normally adorning only the front and rear of the outsole has also been used on the LF1’s mud-guard and toe box — though this star-studded pattern is now made from plastic on the LF1.
This AF1-inspired duckboot also sees the Air Force 1’s original outsole recreated, with the same vertical-pattern tread — albeit with deeper, gripper, and more jagged lugs and in a black finish. This high-traction rubber outsole also comes mated to a modified mid-sole design. And, while it’s no longer really a basketball shoe, the Lunar Force 1 nonetheless retains the Air Force 1’s lightweight Air cushioning unit. Completing the package is a suite of metal lace hardware, and pull tabs on both the heel and tongue.
