Kobe Bryant officially signed with Nike in 2003, eventually debuting with the Zoom Kobe1 a couple of years later. However, during the 2002-2003 season, the late NBA Hall of Famer was a “sneaker free agent.” During that time, Kobe donned several different shoes during his games, most notably Nike’s Air Force 1 in Lakers’ purple and gold colors (which were unreleased at the time). Of course, Kobe would wind up finishing his career with Nike, and continue the partnership into retirement. Nevertheless, his connection to the AF1s might get overshadowed by his iconic signature sneakers over the years. Nike hasn’t forgotten, however, and has recently dropped what might be the most homage-focused release yet. Dubbed the Kobe Air Force 1 Low, the shoes now come dressed in blacked-out snakeskin.

A tribute to Kobe’s “Mamba” nickname, the special-edition Air Force 1s are given a reflective snakeskin look and texture on their synthetic leather uppers — this time entirely in black. Even the Swoosh follows suit. On the back, you’ll also notice the basketball legend’s two retired jersey numbers “8” and “24” embroidered on either heel. The tongue and outer heel feature his signature Sheath logo as well, which was originally chosen to represent a samurai sword in its sheath, as a reference to Kobe’s work ethic and discipline. Meanwhile, special “Mamba Forever” lace dubraes are also included with the sneakers.

The rest of the shoes come complete with classic Air Force 1 hallmarks, such as the overall design language, the perforated toe box for breathability, the Nike Air unit embedded in the foam midsole for extra cushioning, and the rubber outsole, also in black, featuring heritage hoops pivot circles for traction. These sneakers still look and feel like the AF1s you know and love.
