Despite what you might think, not every pair of shoes has to be hyper-specific to a certain task. Debuting in 2020, Nike’s Juniper Trail is a sneaker that’s purpose-built for trail running but actually thrives on its versatility. Clocking in at under $100, the shoe is an incredible choice for the task at hand but can actually serve you well when you’re taking your running session back to town — or even if you’re not running, serving as a fantastic hiking shoe for your wilderness exploration. Whatever the case, the footwear giant has returned with the Juniper Trail 3, the third iteration of one of its most unsung silhouettes.

Currently available in six unique colorways, the Juniper Trail 3 arrives with the popular Trail ATC outsole, which is designed to handle both flat and hilly terrain, and can even keep you supported when the ground is wet and slick — again, giving you a smooth ride if you’re headed from the trail to the town, and back again. For this 3rd-gen model, Nike has redesigned the midsole to be softer and more flexible than before. Case in point, the full-length foam midsole features a flexible mid-foot system for connecting to the upper for a uniform fit and improved comfort and support.

Made from a durable mesh fabric, the upper will make your foot feel locked in whether you’re running through the forest or hiking up the hillside. According to the brand, the touch points along the collar foam and tongue have been softened to minimize distractions as well. Weighing about 11.3oz (in a men’s U.S. size 10), the Juniper Trail 3 has a 10-mm heel drop and features reflective detailing for low-light sessions.
