If you thought Nike wasn’t going to keep evolving, you don’t know them very well. With recent Air Max line expansions such as the futuristic-looking Dn and subsequent Dn8, we’ve been pretty excited about what’s next for the storied athletic giant. We just didn’t think we’d get another new Air Max so soon. Today, Nike has found yet another way to transmogrify the air-infused midsole cushioning tech they invented decades ago. This is the Air Liquid Max.

A Line That Never Stopped Moving
To understand why the Liquid Max matters, you have to go back to 1977, when aerospace engineer M. Frank Rudy walked into Nike’s offices with a pressurized urethane pouch and changed footwear forever. The Air Tailwind debuted in 1978. Tinker Hatfield made the Air unit visible in 1987 with the Air Max 1, pulling inspiration from the Pompidou Centre’s inside-out architecture. What followed was a 40-year relay race of innovation, from the anatomical layering of the ’95, to the full-length heel-to-toe zoom of the ’97, to the foam-free ambition of the 2006 360, and even the VaporMax’s 2017 bet that you could suspend a foot entirely on Air pods. Each release reset the expectation of what Air could be. Teased earlier this week on the feet of rapper Yeat, the Liquid Max is the next handoff.

Point Loaded, Purpose Built
The technology here is deceptively simple in concept and surprisingly complex in execution. Nike’s engineers built what they’re calling “point-loaded Air,” which is basically a foot-mapped contoured unit that places cushioning only where it’s actually needed underfoot, surrounded by cored-out negative space. The result sheds unnecessary material and weight while giving the sole its distinctively fragmented, almost sculptural geometry. It’s flexible, intentionally low to the ground, and designed to deliver what Nike describes as a fluid transition with every step.

Frog Feet
Since it was announced this morning, we’ve been chatting about how much the Air Liquid Max looks like a frog’s foot. Lo and behold, this was intentional from Nike. Design cues were taken from a frog’s toe pads, which inspired both the sole’s architecture and the three-layer textured nanoprint upper. The mesh upper features a near-seamless surface featuring a chrome Swoosh. Below is a tinted transluscent rubber outsole that seems to stand very wide. Sticking to the amphibious theming, Nike is debuting the shoe in a Poison Dart Frog colorway, but a fragment design collab is also readying for a release sometime soon.
