In 1936, Eddie Bauer would forever alter the outdoor apparel landscape when he debuted the original Skyliner jacket — an item that’s widely credited as being the world’s first-ever down jacket. In a bid to honor this game-changing garment, Huckberry linked up with the famed Pacific Northwest outfitter to deliver its own contemporary take on the insulated item, giving way to the Huckberry x Eddie Bauer Skyliner Jacket. And after Huckberry and Eddie Bauer initially linked up to deliver Huck’s interpretation of the 1936 Skyliner last year, the jacket sold out completely in just a matter of hours — prompting the pair to return the the drawing board in order to unveil a new variant of the jacket in a dark smoke colorway.
Boasting a timeless bomber-style silhouette that sports a less boxy, more modernized fit, the HB x EB Skyliner stays remarkably true to the original 1936 jacket, while gaining a few key contemporary updates. Lightweight yet remarkably durable, the jacket’s shell is cut from a DWR-coated nylon that’s been stuffed with ultra-high-loft 800 fill premium down that’s Responsible Down-certified within a quilted stitch pattern. Further bolstering the jacket’s warmth is a yarn-dyed blanket stripe flannel interior liner composed of a poly-wool blend. The jacket’s flannel liner has also been decorated via a custom “Eddie Bauer x Huckberry” logo patch and a second interior patch with the story and illustration of the original 1936 Skyliner Model coat.
Despite its authentic appearance, the Huckberry x Eddie Bauer Skyliner Jacket does feature a handful of modern-day touches. This includes a set of zipper-secured hand pockets at the jacket’s hips, and a single interior pocket designed specifically for accommodating everyday carry gear. The front of the garment also comes outfitted with a storm flap-equipped main closure with a vintage-style zipper with a contrasting leather zipper pull. Rounding out the modernized Skyliner is a ribbed collar, hem, and cuffs that help trap heat inside the jacket. Not only does this jacket offer incredible levels of warmth for its weight, but it’s also one of the most versatile down jackets currently on the market.
