Few clothiers are better at transposing timeless heritage staples for the modern man like Iron & Resin. With one foot in the past and one in the present, Thom Hill launched the brand back in 2011 with the idea of bringing his own personal touch to each of silhouette he makes. As such, every shirt, jacket, and pant would be imbued with the spirit of his local blue-collar beach town of Ventura, California.
Earning its stripes with the ever-popular Rambler jacket and Klamath shirt, Iron & Resin has now taken on a striped classic from the 19th century with the Dogtown Shirt.

The Roots
Tracing its roots back to the mid-to-late 1800s, the striped denim overshirt became favorites for railroad workers and farmers, and are instantly recognizable today for its hickory stripe fabric (named for having strength akin to hickory wood) that traditionally uses blue-and-white cotton twill or denim. The look and style would become so beloved that engineers even adopted it for their caps and dungarees for extra protection on the job.

The Dogtown Shirt
Instead of approaching the silhouette as a historical artifact, Iron & Resin actually considered what a striped denim overshirt would look and feel like in the 21st century.

Aiming to make the striped denim overshirt an everyday essential, the brand gave its Dogtown Shirt the same laid-back grit of the original but with some modern elements like angled hand pockets that are sized just right for items like your phone or wallet, and tilted to keep them inside. Meanwhile, you still get the two signature chest pockets, which have been buttoned down with custom metal buttons.

Available in Dark Wash and Bleach, the long-sleeve shirt gets those same buttons down the front and on the cuff for custom fitting. It’s made of 100% cotton striped denim with either copper- or white-colored stitching all over. Lastly, a locker loop draw cord is put on the inside of the collar and an Iron & Resin label has been woven into the neck area.
