These days, the barn coat is a bit of a misnomer. Born from the French chore coat (bleu de travail) of the 1800s, the silhouette made its way across the Atlantic to the United States soon after. After the turn of the century, we saw upgrades that include the addition of a corduroy collar, triple‑stitched seams, and riveted pockets. While hunters and ranchers certainly favored the jacket for utilitarian reasons, the barn coat quickly became a style icon. For a modern-day interpretation that stays true to its heritage, Flint and Tinder has crafted the Mason Canvas Barn Jacket, and you’ll never guess it didn’t come from your grandfather’s closet.
Known for putting its own spin on vintage staples, Flint and Tinder has done it again here, cutting the Barn Jacket from super-tough cotton canvas (75%) intended to patina with age. It’s blended with nylon (24%) for durability and spandex (1%) for stretch. Like classic examples, this iteration features four large pockets on the outside, including two drop-ins down below for larger items and a button chest pocket on the right-hand side. There’s even an interior pocket for your phone or wallet.
For colder days, the jacket is insulated with polyester fill, but without adding much bulk. The classic corduroy collar is made from 14 Wale cotton corduroy and matches the inside of the sleeve cuffs, which are designed to roll back with adjustable shank buttons. Available in Dark Olive and Khaki, the coat also features a set of five vintage-looking metal buttons down the front and a hanging locket loop in back.
