Thanks to its growing range of silhouettes that blend hardwearing heritage with a dedicated love for vintage Americana, Flint and Tinder has quickly become one of the most revered clothing brands around. Possibly the most emblematic if its design ethos, the clothier’s Classic Chore Coat sets the bar very, very high.
The chore coat itself has a long history, originally started by French rail workers in the 1800s for its spacious pockets and rugged fabric (typically cotton drill or moleskin) dyed to hide stains from the job. Inspired by pieces from its Head Designer’s own vintage collection, Flint and Tinder’s Classic Chore Coat looks to the past but styles it to the modern man.
Signature elements are present and accounted for, such as the aforementioned pockets — three large patch pockets on the outside and a drop-in on the inside, each given handsome stitching around the border. The two at the waist have both top and side entries for storing anything from your phone, earbuds, keys, or even just a handwarmer.
Blending both utilitarian versions of the chore coats of yore with a more refined aesthetic akin to a modern blazer, the jacket features a subtle polish on the outer shell with a clean look topped with five large corozo buttons down the front. Available in Chocolate, Dark Navy, Earth, and Military Olive, the 8.3-ounce chore coat sticks with a midweight cotton fabric (98%) but then sprinkles in a dash of Spandex (2%) for stretch. Perfect for layering over a t-shirt, it’s also been garment washed to make it feel more lived-in out the box.
