Columbia Flips the Script on 3-in-1 Jackets With a Heritage-Inspired Hybrid Vest

For decades, Columbia has been synonymous with affordable, quality outdoor gear. But just because it’s affordable doesn’t mean that it can’t be stylish. That’s what the Oregon-based brand is aiming to prove with its latest CSC1938 collection, a heritage-inspired line that looks more streetwear-driven than anything they’ve ever put out. It’s highlighted with a hybrid jacket-vest that looks like something that would cost twice the price.

A Reverse Take on the Interchange System

The CSC1938 Dually Mountain Outerchange throws out the traditional 3-in-1 playbook entirely. Instead of the typical waterproof shell with a zip-in liner, Columbia went rogue, pairing a 700-fill RDS-certified goose down puffer with a tactical utility vest that zips onto the outside of the jacket. This totally inverts their iconic Interchange system that’s been around since 1986.

The vest itself draws from Columbia’s archives, specifically the Henry’s Fork Vest that founder Gert Boyle sewed herself back in the 1960s for hunters who needed extra storage. Here, it’s been reimagined with modern cargo pockets and a sleeker silhouette that might look more appropriate in an urban environment than in the woods. Worn together, the combo creates this layered, utilitarian aesthetic that taps into the gorpcore trend. Separately, the puffer is intended to give you “maximum warmth.” Meanwhile, the vest can be added on top of a thermal or t-shirt, adding a functional edge.

Built for More Than Looks

The jacket’s shell is made of 100% nylon with Omni-Shield for moisture and stain resistance, while the Omni-Heat Infinity lining uses an expanded thermal-reflective pattern to trap body heat. You might know that this is the same technology NASA tested on the moon in 2024. It feels arguably excessive for a winter jacket but speaks to Columbia’s commitment to performance.

Other thoughtful features include a two-way zipper (perfect for venting heat or accommodating a pack’s sternum strap), pass-through hand pockets on the vest that access the jacket’s zippered pockets, and a drawcord-adjustable hood. The vest’s unique zipper system keeps it securely in place over your jacket so it’s not just resting on your shoulders.

Heritage Meets Hype

CSC1938 (named for Columbia’s founding year) represents the brand’s most focused attempt at creating something with streetwear appeal while honoring its Pacific Northwest roots. The first drop features eight pieces, including hoodies, tees, and hats.

Recap

Columbia CSC 1938 Dually Mountain Outerchange Jacket Vest

Columbia’s flipping their classic 3-in-1 jacket formula with the CSC1938 Dually Mountain Outerchange — a 700-fill down puffer that pairs with a tactical vest that zips on the outside instead of inside. At $425, it’s pulling from the brand’s 1960s hunting archives but styled for streetwear, dropping in black or camo.
