Back in March, Arc’teryx debuted its Kragg approach shoe. Blending the comfortability and no-frills nature of a flip-flop with the support of a climbing shoe, the slip-ons featured a single piece of stretchy Spacermesh for the uppers, but the heel was designed to collapse so you could transform the model into a slide for recovery post-climb. Arc’teryx has wasted little time evolving the Kragg, which is now available in a winter-ready version.

Arc’teryx Kragg Insulated Shoe Basics
Adding to the stretchy temperature-regulated uppers is an injection of PrimaLoft Gold insulation for warmth. This is a synthetic that’s both breathable and warm. And unlike goose down, its performance won’t get compromised if it gets wet. Under the foot, you get a PrimaLoft Aerogel insole, which will keep your feet warm even if you choose to go step inside barefoot.
More than just a warmer version, the Kragg Insulated also seems to be a bit more durable. While it’s not exactly specified if Spacermesh was used this time around on the Insulated model, Arc’teryx has added the word “ripstop” to the upper description, which wasn’t there last time around.
Returning to the shoe is the grippy Vibram Megagrip outsole and molded rubber toe cap for protection, as well as the same sock liner, made with a partially bio-based PU compound with an open-cell foam top layer. In addition, the Insulated model now features a stretch-knit collar up top to eliminate drafts and extend the warmth to the ankle area while also adding support more like a standard hiking boot.

Some Key Differences
If you were into the collapsible heel feature of the Kragg, it seems to be gone with this winterized version. And while that was a unique selling point for the approach shoe, it’s admittedly moot for cold-weather climates. If you’re in a location that’s frigid enough to require insulation, you won’t be clamoring to swap your shoes for a pair of slides.
The added insulation also happens to transform the uppers to a more accessible look. You not only have a higher collar but the mesh looks much more rigid and even stylish.
