With the preponderance of online shopping these days, even prior to the pandemic, physical department stores and shopping malls have been shutting their doors more and more as time goes on, quickly becoming abandoned wastelands of yesteryear. However, the tangible activity of in-person shopping shouldn’t be understated. Browsing for food, books, clothes, shoes, and even collectibles can create a sensory and personal experience unmatched by anything else.
As the kingpin of online commerce, Amazon has led the charge of our evolving consumer habits. Although, they too must have recognized that brick-and-mortar shopping can still have its place in our society as well. This week, one of the biggest companies in the world has just opened the doors of its very first clothing store, at the Americana shopping mall in Glendale, CA.
Amazon already has a handful of stores, either dedicated to books (Amazon Go) or food (Amazon Fresh), but this is the first time they’ve entered into department store territory. Carrying clothes, shoes, and accessories for both men and women, Amazon Style will use the latest technology to merge together the online shopping experience with an in-person one. You can scan a QR code next to an item to find out more information about it, and then have your preferred size sent to either checkout or the interactive fitting rooms in which you’re able to see what other items are available without having to leave.
A brick-and-mortar clothing store makes the most sense, since trying on outfits you buy online and then sending them back after they don’t fit is a real hassle and has a needlessly wasteful impact on the planet. Amazon Style eliminates this middle step. Featuring brands such as Calvin Klein, Levi’s, Champion, Lacoste, and literally hundreds more, the shop will price their items the exact same as they do for online purchase and you can effortlessly check out using your mobile device. If you’re in the area, you can head over to Amazon Style, open now at the Americana in Glendale, CA.
