When you’re compiling your EDC loadout, every millimeter counts. For your gear, a smaller profile means less weight and more room in your pockets for other essentials. Although you wouldn’t want to nab a super-slim knife from any ol’ brand, you can certainly count on The James Brand, who is among the best when it comes to figuring out how to make specific designs work, both practically and at high quality. For over a decade, the company has built a reputation for offering sleek, compact tools for everyday carry. And yet, it’s just made its most compact pocket knife to date.
Joining the likes of its other slip-joint pocket knives such as the Ellis and Elko, The James Brand’s Ellis Slim is the thinnest full-length knife it’s ever made. Dropping the thickness down by one-third — from 12mm to 8mm — the company claims it’s now “thinner than a pack of gum.” This new thinness was accomplished by removing the scissors that came in that made the original Ellis a standard multi-tool. However, the All-Things pry bar/scraper/flathead attachment in the back remains here, which also doubles as a key ring attachment.
Weighing 0.8oz less than its progenitor, the Ellis Slim retains most of the same specs from before, including the 3.5-inch handle length, the 2.6-inch blade length, and the Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel blade material. Unlike the plethora of options for the Ellis, just three variants are available for the Ellis Slim so far, including two straight-edge drop-point blades — one with a Canary yellow aluminum handle and the other with black G10 scales — and a black serrated-edge blade with Coyote tan G10 scales.
