Volkswagen’s line of electric vehicles, dubbed the ID. series, is an interesting one, to say the least. With models that range from the very electric-looking ID.3 hatchback and ID.Buzz minivan to its trio of more discreet crossover SUVs in the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.6, the series not only has (wisely) avoided settling into a specific aesthetic with its electric cars, but has also refrained from adding a sedan to its lineup. That is, until now.
The Volkswagen ID.Aero is the German carmaker’s very first electric sedan. Erring more on the side of understated when it comes to EVs, the vehicle is nevertheless beautiful, with a curvaceous frame and flowing silhouette that lend themselves to a more aerodynamic build. The 22″ two-tone wheels help give the car a futuristic aesthetic thanks to their turbine-style design. Opting out of traditional door handles, the vehicle sports illuminated touch surfaces instead, which also helps with drag resistance.
Utilizing VW’s modular electric drive matrix, which has been in place for all of the automaker’s EVs thus far, the Aero features a long wheelbase, achieving nearly 200″ in total length, with a generous interior space and a fastback-style rear roof slope that hits a drag coefficient of 0.23. As for its drivability, the mid-size sedan has a powerful lithium-ion battery at its core, boasting a net energy content of 77 kWh and a range of up to 385 miles, establishing this as a long-range vehicle.
As for now, the ID.Aero remains a concept model, with production beginning in China and parts of Europe in 2023, but U.S. versions will also roll out eventually. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on Volkswagen’s website.
