The $20K ID. EVERY1 Concept Is Volkswagen’s Modern-Day All-Electric “People’s Car”

New cutting-edge technology is very, very seldom accessible priced. For this reason, state-of-the-art products and tech are usually reserved for the wealthy, before that same once-expensive technology eventually trickles down to larger-scale production, becoming more widely adopted and bringing prices down. And while it’s taken quite a while — and is admittedly still a year or two out — Volkswagen has just unveiled a concept car that’s earmarked for eventual production that offers a slew of decent selling points at a price that’s practically guaranteed to alter the new electric vehicle landscape forever.

Introducing, the aptly-named Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 — because at prices like this, that’s who will be able to afford one.

Chassis & Motor

Just like with VW’s ID. 2all and ID. GTI concepts, the ID. EVERY1 is constructed around the brand’s newly-developed modular electric drive platform, which employs a front-wheel drive setup propeled by an also-newly-developed electric drive motor. Good for 70kW (or about 94hp), VW’s new electric motor allows the concept to reach a top speed of 80mph while delivering a range of 155 miles per charge.

Dimensions & Interior

In terms of size, the ID. EVERY1 spans 12.7’ in length, slotting right in between the ID. 2all and the current Polo. Sporting an aeshtic that’s equal parts futuristic and spartan, the inside of the EV concept features seating for four, a large central touch screen display, ample use of recycled materials, and a luggage compartment offering 10.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

The Exterior

The outside of the ID. EVERY1 has a boxy yet unmistkably modern appearance, being decidedly sleek while still being easily recognizable as a VW — and one that leans into its European origin and identity through its aesthetics.

“Our ambition was to create something bold yet accessible,” explains Volkswagen Head of Design Andreas Mindt. The ID. ID. EVERY1 has a self-assured appearance but remains likeable – thanks to details such as the dynamic front lights and the ‘smiling’ rear. These design elements make it more than just a car: they give it character and an identity that people can relate to.”

The Modern-Day Type 1

Shown off in prototype form in 1938 though not entering production until after WW2, the Volkswagen Type 1 was a revolutionary vehicle that aimed to make driving an automobile accessible to common, everyday people — which is why the name “Volkswagen” litterally translates to “the people’s car.” And in many ways, the ID. EVERY1 is a modern-day incarnation of the Type 1 — aka Beetle — that hopes to open driving an electric vehicle up to the masses the same way the Type 1 did for driving in general amost 90 years ago.

Why We Love It

The truth is that with the ID. EVERY1’s specs aren’t all that impressive. It makes less horsepower than my twin-cylinder motorcycle and we can only imagine its 0-60mph time is probably around 7-10 seconds. Sure, the thing looks sleek, but sleek new electric cars are a dime a dozen these days. Yeah, the interior is thoroughly modern-looking and fairly well-appointed, but again, dime a dozen these days. If you’re judging this concept by its spec sheet, however, you’re missing the point.

What really makes this concept such a game-changer is the fact that Volkswagen plans on selling the production version of the ID. EVERY1 for approximately $20,000, which is less than the sticker on a new Honda Civic. There’s a decent chance that we’ll see other EVs with accessible price tags in the time between now and when the ID. EVERY1 hits the road, but it’s still hard to imagine that this soon-to-be-production model won’t be something of a game-changer, opening up electric vehicles to the masses.
