Since 2001, Honda’s been steadily building its presence in China through its joint venture with Sundiro. And after churning out over 10 million units from that partnership alone, they’ve finally given us what’s arguably their most unique model so far.
The Square X125 is a 125cc scooter that looks like it came right out of a utilitarian design handbook. And it’s one of our favorite urban mobility bikes we’ve seen in a while.

Built Like a Toolbox, Rides Like Honda
The name doesn’t lie. This thing is angular, boxy, and unapologetically square in every dimension. It’s the kind of design that either clicks with you immediately or doesn’t, but there’s something admirable about a manufacturer that commits this hard to a utilitarian aesthetic.
The split saddle system deserves particular attention here. You flip the pillion section forward and it becomes a backrest for solo rides, or fold it down completely to reveal a luggage rack underneath. It’s also designed for the option of throwing on a top box, some camping gear, or even a pet carrier. There’s also a retractable side tray that functions as a small table, which could be perfect for a campsite or even just grabbing coffee somewhere on the road.

The Heart of the Matter
Under all that angular bodywork sits Honda’s proven 124cc eSP+ single-cylinder engine — a fan-cooled four-stroke unit producing 9.5hp at 7,750 rpm and 7.3lb.ft of torque at 5,750 rpm. With a claimed top speed around 55 mph and fuel consumption of just 138mpg, the 1.5-gallon tank delivers roughly 207 miles between fill-ups. The dual-channel ABS is a nice touch. It’s still relatively rare in this displacement class and adds a layer of confidence when braking on varied terrain.

Function Over Flash
The Square X125’s spec sheet includes practical necessities such as LED lighting front and rear, a compact windscreen, a 5-inch color display, USB-A and USB-C ports with 20W fast charging, and a remote key system. The 6.3″ of ground clearance paired with long-travel suspension and a 90/90-12 front and 100/90-10 rear tire setup should handle everything from city potholes to dirt trails. At 269lbs wet and a 29.1-inch seat height, it’s approachable for riders of different sizes looking for a new commuter bike that can a lot more.
