There are few race cars more prolific in recent vintage than the Mercedes-AMG GT3. However, the racing outfit has a long history that dates back to 1967 when it entered its 300SEL 6.3 V8 saloon in a number of grand tourer championships, finally nabbing its first win in 1971’s 24 Hours of Spa. In 2015, the marque debuted the GT3 — a racing version of the GT supercar — and has since racked up over 200 wins in competition. Today, Mercedes-AMG has released a special version of the GT3 to celebrate the brand’s 55th anniversary. And just like with the 45th anniversary, only five examples are available.
The new GT3 EDITION 55 feels like more of an expression of creativity than anything else, which is what makes it so unique. Because it’s not abiding by any homologation, the vehicle is able to have more freedom with its motor capabilities. To better utilize the AMG 6.3L V8 engine, which puts out 650hp (100 more than the FIA edition), Mercedes-AMG has outfitted the car in visible carbon for the front and rear diffusers, the wing, grill, and side skirts. On the inside as well, the center console, doors, seat, and dashboard are all equipped with visible carbon.
The dashboard itself boasts a state-of-the-art Bosch DDU 11 display system, which shows the driver their speed, RPM, temperatures, lap times, and shift information, all in high resolution. Along with this exclusive car comes an equally-limited timepiece from IWC Schaffhausen. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph EDITION 55 is made from grade 5 titanium and comes engraved with the specific chassis and edition number for the accompanying automobile.
Again, only five of these cars will be made, each with a numbered plaque inscription on the console and seats. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 EDITION 55 will be sold for €625,000 (~$622,513).
