Years of piecing together rooftop tent and awning setups won’t always yield an elegant result. You end up with mismatched gear, redundant mounting hardware, and a Jeep that looks like it’s hauling a small apartment building. Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) and heritage cooler brand Dometic have aimed to solve all that with their new Wrangler-based ARTT (Awning and RoofTop Tent) concept, an all-in-one, seamlessly integrated awning and rooftop tent system that just debuted at the Overland Expo West this past weekend.

When Two Camping Titans Collide
Dometic has been perfecting mobile living solutions since 1919, when Swedish engineers invented the world’s first absorption refrigerator. After bouncing between Arctic and Electrolux over the decades, they finally went independent in 2001 and never looked back. Today, they’re the go-to name when RV manufacturers need reliable, well-engineered cooler systems that actually work in the field.
For their latest endeavor, partnering with Jeep’s aftermarket off-road house made a lot of sense. JPP has spent over a decade turning Wranglers into more capable adventure machines. Unlike other aftermarket companies that treat Jeeps as blank canvases, JPP works directly with the marque’s engineering teams, using factory data and testing protocols that external brands simply can’t access.

Carbon Fiber Meets Common Sense
Overlanders will instantly see how the ARTT concept addresses the fundamental flaws plaguing traditional rooftop tent setups. Bolting a heavy tent onto roof racks adds weight and drag and compromises the vehicle’s center of gravity. Instead, this new system actually replaces the Wrangler’s Freedom Panels. The carbon fiber shell becomes part of the roof structure, eliminating the need for additional mounting hardware entirely. The integrated design means you no longer would have to LEGO-build your setup on top of other parts.
For an even quicker lightweight setup, Dometic’s AIR Frame inflation technology handles both the tent deployment and the 270-degree awning extension with over 100sq.ft of shade underneath. Fans of the brand’s inflatable camping gear know this isn’t just a marketing gimmick. Their air frame systems are tough as nails and actually set up in minutes without the wrestling match that comes with traditional pole structures. The tent itself is large enough for a queen-sized mattress and has a 60-inch headspace at its peak.
Perhaps our favorite feature is the interior access hatch. Once you remove the Freedom Panels, you can climb directly from the Wrangler’s cabin into the tent via a carbon fiber step that protects the center console. Aftermarket rooftop tents will come with a step ladder that you hook on to the outside of the vehicle, but this build works like a hardshell truck camper of sorts. This is especially useful for harsher weather or more dangerous situations when exiting the tent to the outside world just isn’t an option.

Sunchaser Foundation
For this one-off, the ARTT concept rides atop the yellow-bodied Wrangler 4xe Sunchaser, which is itself a carefully curated showcase of adventure capability. JPP equipped the vehicle with a 2-inch lift kit and 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires, creating the ground clearance needed for serious trail work. The exterior gets custom vented high-top steel fender flares and integrated side storage boxes with MOLLE panels. A Warn winch sits behind a custom front winch guard, while rock rails protect the undercarriage from potential trail damage.
Inside, custom two-tone leather seats complement a leather-wrapped dashboard and center console, with all interior trim pieces finished in a glossy black. All-weather floor mats and an IP multi-accessory rail complete the adventure-friendly build but not without touches of style. The 4xe’s hybrid powertrain combines a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with electric motors, delivering 375hp while maintaining the fuel efficiency needed for extended backcountry expeditions.
