Pininfarina and Honda’s Racing Partner Are Bringing the NSX Back to Life Four Decades Later

Back in 1984, Honda and Pininfarina joined forces on the HP-X concept, a mid-engine wedge that would eventually morph into the NSX. Four decades later, that partnership is reigniting with something far more intriguing than a concept study. JAS Motorsport, the Italian outfit responsible for building the NSX GT3 racer, has teamed up with Pininfarina to create a carbon-bodied reimagining of the NA1-generation NSX. And from the teaser images alone, it’s clear this will be well-worth the wait.

The Pininfarina Touch

Rather than dramatically overhauling the NSX’s silhouette, Pininfarina approached this project with some restraint. The black canopy stays, the pop-up headlights remain (thankfully), and that iconic hoop spoiler out back hasn’t gone anywhere. But look closer and you’ll notice the carbon fiber bodywork adds a much-welcomed modern touch. Vents appear behind swollen front fenders, the rear-quarter intakes have grown, and there’s even a hood vent reminiscent of the legendary NSX-R. More importantly, the proportions seem dramatically improved over the original’s narrow rear track and awkwardly long overhang.

Motorsport Know-How in Every Detail

Since 1998, the Milan-based JAS team has been Honda’s official racing partner across multiple touring car championships, from the BTCC to TCR. They’ve racked up over 900 race wins with Honda-powered machinery and developed the customer program for the second-generation NSX GT3 that clinched back-to-back IMSA GTD championships in 2019 and 2020. That racing pedigree will translate directly into this road car, with refined mechanical components pulled straight from the competition world.

The cockpit redesign (though there are no pictures yet) honors the original NSX philosophy that Honda articulated 35 years ago: “A car functions through a direct connection with the driver and passenger.” In other words, this won’t be a stripped-out track vehicle. Pininfarina has reimagined the interior to deliver proper grand touring comfort while maintaining a driver-focused ethos. Both left- and right-hand drive configurations will be available, built around donor NA1 chassis in JAS Motorsport’s Arluno workshop.

The Heart of the Matter

Power comes from a naturally aspirated V6 that JAS describes as “NSX-inspired.” This likely means a heavily reworked version of either the 3.0-liter C30A or 3.2-liter C32B. Either way, expect significant increases in power, torque, and throttle response over the stock motor’s 270 hp. A six-speed manual transmission is the only option.
