Gordon Murray’s New S1 LM Is the True Successor to the 1995 Le Mans-Winning McLaren F1

Three decades after revolutionizing supercars with the McLaren F1, Gordon Murray has finally given us what feels like a true spiritual successor. The GMSV S1 LM is a direct homage to the 1995 Le Mans-winning McLaren F1 GTR, commissioned by a client who clearly understands automotive history. This also marks the debut project from Gordon Murray Special Vehicles, Murray’s new venture focused on bespoke builds and ultra-limited runs.

Pure F1 DNA

The S1 LM’s design language immediately transports you back to the mid-’90s, but with modern aerodynamic sophistication. Murray and his team crafted every surface specifically for this car, from the model-specific front splitter to a commanding rear wing. The proportions echo the F1’s timeless silhouette while incorporating that coveted “coke-bottle” waist Murray always felt the original lacked. Those five-spoke wheels should make it to production, though the tempting pop-up headlights will likely disappear before the final build.

The three-seat cockpit configuration stays true to F1 tradition, placing the driver dead center with passengers flanking either side. It’s an arrangement that prioritizes the driving experience above all else.

Aerodynamic Mastery

The S1 LM builds around a central airfoil and roof-mounted intake that channel air with surgical precision. A split rear wing works in tandem with a wide rear diffuser to sweep air out from under the body, creating significant downforce without the controversial fan system from Murray’s T.50. The central four-part exhaust system is crafted from custom Inconel with 18-karat gold-foiled heat shielding — a direct nod to the original F1’s extravagant details.

Engineering Excellence

Under its sculpted carbon fiber skin lies a heavily modified version of the T.50’s powertrain. The 4.0-liter V-12 has been bored out to 4.3L, producing over 690hp with lighter internals and a higher compression ratio, along with a 12,100-rpm redline promises an absolutely intoxicating soundtrack.

The manual gearbox uses T.50 internals with revised linkage for what GMSV describes as “short rifle-bolt throws.” Suspension geometry has been recalibrated for a lower stance with track-specific damper settings that go above and beyond your average tribute car.
