The hypercar landscape just got a lot more interesting. Newcomer Giamaro Automobili has emerged from Italy with the brand-new Katla, a stunning debut model named after an Icelandic volcano that bucks industry trends with its massive quad-turbocharged 7.0-liter V12. While most other marques seem to be headed towards full electrification, this upstart is doubling down on mechanical madness with up to 2,127hp of power.

MATTRESS MOGUL TURNS HYPERCAR VISIONARY

Behind Giamaro’s ambitious entrance stands Giacomo Commendatore, a successful entrepreneur who transitioned from bedding to bodywork. After making his fortune with Eminflex Materassi, Commendatore became an early Pagani investor before founding Giamaro with his son Pierfrancesco in 2021. The father-son duo has spent the last four years quietly assembling an impressive roster of talent from the likes of Pagani, Ferrari, and Lamborghini.

What separates Giamaro from countless other hypercar startups with big promises is their in-house approach. Rather than outsourcing key ride components, they’ve developed their engine in-house and even set up shop in Italy’s Motor Valley. They’ve also secured Loris Bicocchi as chief test driver. Bicocchi is known for his development work on icons like the Bugatti EB110, Veyron, Pagani Zonda, and early Koenigseggs.

POWER PLAY

Compared to the already-impressive supercar competition, the Katla is still staggering when you look at its specs. Inside sits a completely bespoke 6,988cc V12 with a distinctive 120-degree “hot V” layout housing four turbochargers. The standard configuration delivers 1,670hp and 1,148lb.ft of torque, while an extreme tune pushes output to an unbelievable 2,157hp and 1,481lb.ft of torque. Giamaro has yet to unveil the top speed for the Katla.

Power reaches the rear wheels through a seven-speed automated manual transmission with a mechanical limited-slip differential, though engineers are reportedly developing an 11-speed dual-clutch gearbox for future iterations. While official performance figures remain under wraps, the power-to-weight ratio hints at something we’ve rarely seen before, especially considering the car’s relatively low 3,197lb curb weight.

ENGINEERED FOR EMOTION

The impressive weight is in part thanks to a carbon fiber monocoque weighing just 375 pounds, contributing to the car’s claimed 42:58 front-to-rear weight distribution. It has further help from the suspension components, which are machined from solid aluminum alloy blocks.

Stopping power comes from carbon-ceramic discs measuring an enormous 420mm at all four corners, gripped by 10-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers. They’re housed behind 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels wrapped in specially-developed Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires. Aerodynamics play a crucial role too, with an active rear wing that adjusts position based on speed and driving conditions and can even function as an air brake during hard deceleration.

VISUAL DRAMA

The Katla’s yellow exterior was penned by Alessandro Camorali of Caval Studio, whose résumé includes work with Ferrari, Pininfarina, and Bertone. Rather than aiming to fit in with contemporaries, Camorali drew inspiration from the golden era of ’90s supercars, particularly the proportions of icons like the Bugatti EB110 and Lamborghini Diablo. Despite the aggressive appearance, the car’s drag coefficient is a mere 0.33.

Once you open up the gullwing doors, you’ll get a glimpse of the fighter jet-inspired cabin which blends carbon fiber, aluminum, and textile surfaces. Meanwhile, digital instrument clusters and the infotainment system are angled towards the driver to improve his focus.

For those seeking something even more exclusive, Giamaro has also teased its rally-inspired Albor, which shares the Katla’s monocoque and powertrain but adds increased ground clearance and rugged bodywork. Whichever vehicle you like best, it’s clear that Giamaro is a name you should expect to hear more from in the future.
