Ford just dropped the mic at Laguna Seca Raceway with the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon, a variant showcasing every visible weave pattern of the raw carbon fiber construction underneath. This is Ford’s most unfiltered expression of their GT3-inspired street weapon, serving as a reminder that this pony car shares DNA with actual race machines competing in IMSA.
Racing Heritage Meets Street Credibility
The GTD program emerged from Ford’s desire to be a serious competitor in GT3 racing, pinning their Mustang GT3 against European exotics on tracks worldwide. Unlike previous Mustang performance variants that focused primarily on horsepower, the GTD is a fundamental shift toward track-focused engineering that rivals the best from Germany and Italy. The Liquid Carbon takes this philosophy to its logical extreme by literally exposing the race-derived construction methods that define modern motorsport.
Carbon fiber is the preferred body construction for top-flight racing series, where every gram matters and aerodynamic efficiency can determine your podium position. The Liquid Carbon’s exposed weave creates a cohesive visual pattern that runs down the vehicle’s midline, with the hood, roof, rear deck, and rear wing perfectly aligned. Even the fenders and side panels match up with the dorsal elements.
Performance Through Subtraction
Ignoring paint entirely and replacing door sheet metal with bonded carbon fiber saves 13lbs compared to the Carbon Series with Performance package. The included Performance package brings 20-inch magnesium wheels, additional aerodynamic elements, Drag Reduction System flap, and semi-active racing suspension as standard equipment.
The cabin continues the race-inspired theme with black leather and Dinamica microfiber suede featuring Hyper Lime contrast stitching throughout the seats, door panels, and steering wheel. A reflective center gradient pattern on the seats looks fantastic but still reminds you that this is a track-focused vehicle.
Under the hood sits Ford Performance’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 delivering 815hp and 664lb.ft of torque, channeled through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Those figures enable a 3.3-second sprint to 60 mph and a 202-mph top speed, making this a definite supercar.
